Lumigan is a brand name of an ophthalmic solution which contains bimatoprost. It is a type of drug called prostaglandin analog which is used to treat the increasing pressure within the eye.
Intraocular pressure or a pressure within the eyes is normally controlled by a constant flow of aqueous humor; a liquid that moisturizes the eyeball. Aqueous humor is released by the cilia body; the ring part of the eye. It continuously flows and drains out of the eyeball through the trabecular meshwork or the eye chambers.
When this liquid does not properly drain out from the eyeballs, it will build up and clog in the eye chambers which will cause the increase of pressure within the eyeballs. This pressure must be reduced since it can lead to serious damage to the optic disc which may result to impair vision or even blindness.
The Bimatoprost in Lumigan can lower the pressure in the eye. Since it is synthetic prostaglandins, it copies or mimics the role of naturally released prostaglandins by the body. Prostaglandins are autocrines or paracrines which act as messenger molecules and can be found in many parts of the body. Its role in the eyes is to increase the drainage and add up to the eye liquid which could help to sooth out the flow through the eyeballs which decreases the pressure within the eyes.
Lumigan is discovered, formulated and manufactured by Allergan, Inc. It is an ophthalmic solution in the form of eyedrops. It is widely known and has gained the approval of Food and Drug Administration as the best solution for treatment of increased or elevated eye pressure in an open-angle glaucoma and management of glaucoma. However, a prescription from doctors is needed to acquire this medicine.
